ENGLISCH CONTEMPORARY CORPORATE ARCHITECTURE is a compilation of the most interesting international projects today, which focus on the presentation and reinforcement of a companyʼs corporate identity. It has been common practice since the 1980s to make use of the communicative possibilities of architecture, both regarding the interior design as well as the exterior appearance of a building: the construction itself is transformed into a symbol of the residing company, hotel or bank. In a similar way as graphic and web design shape a companyʼs corporate identity with the help of logos, websites and public appearance, architecture too has become an important marketing tool. Large companies have the power to greatly influence and shape a cityʼs image: by hiring renowned architects such as Foster & Partners, 3XN and Eric van Egeraat, all of which known for their spectacular designs, they are able to channel the attention of the media from the early planning stages, to the construction phase, furnishing and inauguration of the building. Representative buildings for companies, political, economic, cultural and religious institutions or associations have a longstanding tradition in the history of architecture. Their purpose has always been to demonstrate the clientʼs status in society: their position of power, influence and historical importance. In todayʼs ever changing urban environment defined by multiplicity and differentiation, corporate architecture has become an enormous challenge. Apart from fulfilling functional and aesthetic demands and representing the clientʼs corporate identity, other factors such as “location” are no less to be undermined. City centers, industrial parks or residential areas – to stand out from the surrounding building projects thanks to unique features is no less important than fitting in and complementing the existing cityscape. New media and innovative forms and material make sure that these complex demands are met today.

Piero Lissoni cultivates the art of understatement. Although one of Italy's most successful designers, he is barely present in the media. Nonetheless, within the haute volee of international design there is hardly a company on which Piero Lissoni has not left his mark. So far he is known more for his furniture design rather than his architecture. He is often thought of as a minimalist, but in reality Piero Lissoni's aim is to create a complementary cohabitation of different styles. His highest goal is simplicity: as a way of thinking, as an attitude, simplicity holds a great inner complexity. For Piero Lissoni it is always imperative to scale down and get to the bottom of things. In the metropolis of design an architect automatically also works as both designer and graphic artist. So far the name Piero Lissoni has been more often connected with his furniture than with his architecture. Committed to the humanist idea that one should be productive in different fields, his Milan studio pursues allround design, creating furniture, houses, hotels and yachts, as well as providing artistic direction for prominent furniture companies, for whom, in a process of constant dialogue, Piero Lissoni creates a clear and distinct brand image. A chair is as important to him as a house and the planning of a kitchen as significant as the concept for a building. In his design he tends to merge complex conditions and relationships into holistic yet simple forms. As an architect he understands himself as a specialist for the whole composition. It is his intention not to get lost in detail but to bring the details into context. Great liberality and seductive elegance are the trademarks Piero Lissoni bestows upon luxury labels all over the world. He has played a decisive role in raising kitchen and bath design to cult status. He designs for practicality yet incorporates the ritual of the act. He attunes his design to human criteria and only then begins with the technical implementation. Both his designs and his architecture are «quiet». Sometimes he places a stronger emphasis on dimension, proportion or colour, but most of the time his concepts lean towards the elementary, towards light-and-dark contrasts as well as towards gravity, which is balanced by the usage of less ponderous elements in order to stress light, air and empty space. His graphic designs are bright monochrome and translucent but they can also reveal a dark side. The austere black-and-white creates a neutral basis to which green or orange are added. This synthesis expresses the will to contradict, a fact which plays an important part in Piero Lissoni's character. In many ways his work seems almost schizophrenic: it is simple and yet highly complex.

Broadcast design and television branding bear an important prominence in our world today. Audiovisual design, in terms of content and technology, is fast-paced: the TV landscape faces great changes in distribution channels and different content models. Those changes demand a strict strategic brand development, which should be suitable for the on-air designs as well as for a range of other media channels and merchandising. With Broadcast Design Bjorn Bartholdy introduces the corporate design of ten selected international TV channels like BBC, FOX or arte. It gives examples of on-air design positions, introduces the collaboration between channels and design agencies and features interviews of the channel's representatives. Enclosed is a DVD to show the audiovisual media in their natural environment: on screen.

Since streets become increasingly crowded, living on the top of a building promises privacy and distance. Rooftops have become the symbol of a new lifestyle — an extension and exclusive enjoyment of an area traditionally unused: the architectural crown of a building has been transformed into a new area for work or living. Architects, designers and town planners have seen in this final section of a building their last chance to let their fantasies run free and to dramatically shape the cities' skylines with extensions, attics and unique tops. This volume delivers a very close insight in the divers possibilities of the roof design of residential, corporative and other buildings. About 200 projects present the different types of roofs: Pitched roofs, flat roofs with planting vegetation, roof garden as a pool area or further floor space. An index with the contact dates of the designers is enclosed.

It has been the French revolution that has paved the way for an inventive and creative spirit in the arts, architecture, literature, and music that enhanced the development of science and technology of the future. Even a few years back, on the 200th anniversary of the revolution, the city presented more breath-taking monuments to modern architecture, which rival any in Europe. This book presents new and innovative projects by architects, who on the one hand, bear witness to the desire to combine environmentalism with the urban needs and, on the other, to the diversity of influence and changes needed in the architectural outlook. All projects will be listed in alphabetical order to the architects and designers, presented in a very clear layout. As far as available floor plans will give additional insights.

Barcelona is the cultural center of Spain. A tourist's hot spot and one of the most frequented cities in summer. There is a lot more to Barcelona's architecture than just Gaud?. Since the Olympic Games in 1992 international architects began to shape the capital of Modernism with numerous contructions. Norman Foster, Frank O. Ghery and many more have left their footsteps. The Forum of Cultures 2004 provided another opportunity of city planning. Slowly Barcelona has been transformed into a an artistic reference: it has an insatiable appetite for new design and innovations, but still highly values its rich architectural past. Old and new are close. Like this it became a model that other cities may choose to imitate due to its cosmopolitan atmosphere. This book shows the newest architectural developements in Barcelona and introduces several projects. Not only public and cultural buildings but also private houses are shown. As far as available floor plans will give additional insights. An index with contact information of the respective architects is enclosed.

DAS F-PRINZIP is an architectural 3D board game which encourages a playful examination of the letter F. This concept is based on a constellation of four equally formed F-shapes modelled on the walls of a rectangular room. The short lower bar of the F may serve as a partition. Purpose of the game is to explore the manifold, sheer endless possibilities of creating floor plans and three-dimensional constructions. As a connector between language, shape and function, DAS F-PRINZIP enhances spatial thinking. DAS F-PRINZIP is the result of the artist Feyyaz' constant development of his own art environments. It compacts the idea of space into a recurring principle with numerous variants. Each set consists of four wooden F-shapes and a booklet in a box.

For over two centuries, public space has been gradually adjusted to meet the needs of a rapidly growing traffic. Thanks to the mass-motorization of the 50's and 70's in the US respectively Europe and the subsequent development of private mobility, less visionary Traffic Design quickly generated an ugly and alienated architecture. The needed infrastructure had to be built quick and, what was more important, it had to be cheap. In the name of the automobile, the urban space and plenty of landscapes were sacrificed: A threat to man and nature. The change came during the 90's-thanks to a shift in thinking that led to a different appreciation of nature and life quality. Buildings of all kinds-bridges, tunnels, parking garages, drive-throughs and service stations-slowly achieve the potential to become favorite landmarks. They reflect the automobile lifestyle perfectly and secure a new quality of living, especially in urban zones. This is good, since everybody spends more of his lifetime in those public spaces than within its own four walls. Therefore, it is important and necessary to support this new paradigmatic way of thinking. This is effectively fostered by the car maker Renault, who in 2000 launched in Germany the «Renault Traffic Design Award». The competition credits not only completed projects, but also visionary concepts by students that demonstrate a inherent better quality. Looking at projects that have been awarded over the last six years, one notices a consistent increase in design quality. Individual traffic as much as the number of circulating automobiles being due to increase further in the next decades, the importance of good Traffic Design becomes more important every day-and not only in Germany — it seemed to make sense to gather various extraordinary projects from all over the world in one book, as a source of inspiration for designers, consumers and clients. As a whole, the projects not only show different cultural approaches to design, but also show the differing needs of different people, companies and their brands-this all in spite of ongoing globalization. But no matter how different they are, it is always important to plan ahead. Not just because most existing structures cannot fulfill the growing need for mobility, but also because new technologies and materials finally allow for more functional and-even more important-esthetical solutions to be implemented. A new way of thinking and approaching Traffic Design issues is badly needed and appropriate. After all, everyone everyday is confronted with this problem, not only car drivers.

Non Intentional Design (NID) is a term we have invented and which has not yet entered everyday linguistic use. (Perhaps this will change following publication of this book.) NID refers to the day-to-day redefining of the defined. NID deals with norms which are «abnormally» transformed — every day, everywhere, by everyone. It is about the use and the exploitation of objects already designed: the chair (also) becomes a coat stand, a surface to put things on, a ladder or — for example by piling books on the seat — a child's chair; staples are suitable for cleaning fingernails and for removing CDs from the computer; magnets on the fridge turn it into a notice board; steps are not just there to overcome differences in height, but also serve as seats and ramps for skaters; jam jars accommodate pens and Biros; cardboard boxes metamorphose into storage containers, a dirt track provides a shortcut... — the possibilities are endless. Look at your own living room, kitchen or desk from this perspective: you are no exception — you are also an NID person just like the rest of us. Non Intentional Design lends apparently unambiguous objects a polymorphism, implies transformation combined with clever invention and novel functions. NID is created out of necessity, convenience and play. It is frequently reversible and sometimes the product will be given a definite new application. NID does not want to design anything; no new design is being created here. It simply uses, converts, and generates something new or replaces something old as a result. NID could spare us much expense and trouble and could open design professionals' eyes to a more sensitive perception of their clients' requirements. The cultural diversity of the otherwise mainly globally organized and available world of products proves itself in usage only. It is high time to recognize the purely everyday, though exciting reinvention of all objects: because NID re-empowers people by returning to them their confidence and autonomous use of the object world.

London may be known as a city of grey for its persistently cloudy skies, but when it comes to everything else, few cities on the planet can boast such a colorful palette of converging cultures and styles. Inherently vibrant and extraordinarily diverse, it has been one of the most important settlements on the globe for nearly two millennia and still stands today as an international leader in virtually every aspect of a modern society.

The entrance to a house acts as its visiting card. Its conception has changed enormously over the years, as has its social uses, and the space that was once considered indispensable for receiving guests and keeping the house from view on first contact — whether out of a desire to preserve privacy or a belief that it was bad taste to put living space on display — has changed to such an extent that it is on the verge of disappearing from many homes. Even in cases where there is no hall, however, its absence constitutes a type of entrance that tells us about the personality of the occupants and the layout of the space. In fact, in many cases the entrance is the axis around which the space is organized and it takes on a far greater importance than is immediately apparent: if the entrance is well planned, the space will be used to greater advantage and the layout of the various areas will follow a logical order; in contrast, a misguided placement results in an erroneous starting point for a residential project. So, we are devoting these 192 pages to solutions for entrances, of various shapes and styles, belonging to different types of homes from all around the world, drawn up by a wide range of architects.
