Sex and Landscapes was conceived in 2001 as the inaugural show for the new Zurich gallery of Helmut's dealers de Pury & Luxembourg. The idea of introducing the landscapes evolved into the concept of a mix that would balance these with a selection og Helmut's tougher sex pictures. Sex and Landscapes became a fluid concept that has been expanded over time with 30 futher images to bring it to its present Sex and Landscapes will open the Helmut Newton Foundation in the Wilhelm II Palace in Berlin together with the exhibition Us and Them which is a remake of the very successful exhibition by June and Helmut Newton that was shown at different places between 1998 and 2000. The book, which is also the exhibition catalogue, will contain 79 pictures on 112 pages. Travels in the Interior of North America. In 1832 Maximilian Prince of Wied set out with the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer on an expedition to study the way of life of the North American Indians. Starting at the east coast, they followed the courses of the Ohio. Mississippi and Missouri rivers, until they reached the far northern regions of present-day Montana. While the Prince collected ritual implements, noted his observations and transcribed the intensive conversations he conducted with the Indians. Karl Bodmer created fascinating watercolours. Bodmer portrayed the chieftains and the warriors, the dances and the ceremonies, and even captured the bison on the broad expanses of the prairies — images that the general public had never seen before. Consequently, on their return to Europe, the researchers planned a publication of their experiences, which from 1839 onwards appeared in a small, exquisite edition, and finally comprised a portfolio with 81 plates and two volumes of text. Reproduced from a beautiful hand-coloured copy, which remains to this day in the keeping of the Prince's family, Travels in the Interior of North America presents all 81 of the plates and highlights in numerous text passages important details of the paintings. A selection of texts by Prince Maximilian brings the pictures to life and inspires the reader to decipher their mysteries.

The mystery of the revealed form: A mirror of the artistic and intellectual developments of the 17th century. Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606–1669) was one of the most complex and multi–faceted artists of the 17th century. From his initial period in Leiden to his early and late phases in Amsterdam, the stages of Rembrandt’s career mirror the artistic and intellectual developments of the century. After breaking off his studies in Leiden, the young Rembrandt trained as a painter for two years and eventually established his own painting workshop. Characteristic of the Leiden period are his biblical histories, such as The Raising of Lazarus, but the roots of Rembrandt’s portraiture, nourished by his intensive studies of physiognomy, also are to be found in these same years. Later, in Amsterdam, the perfection of Rembrandt’s likenesses initially won him the favor of numerous patrons—but the artist soon surpassed their expectations. Transcending traditional modes of presentation, Rembrandt composed his portraits in the same manner in which he had earlier constructed his scenes. The results are visible, for example, in the famous group portrait The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp from 1632. In the last phase of Rembrandt’s work—when, plagued by financial problems, he had withdrawn into seclusion—it is no longer possible to distinguish between event paintings and portraits.

As a blind person would see the world if the gift of sight suddenly returned — so might one describe the effect of Turner’s paintings on the observer. John Ruskin, the uncompromising nineteenth-century defender of the painting of William Turner (1775-1851) spoke of the ’innocence of the eye’, which perceived the colours and forms of the world before it recognized their significance. But in order to develop such a style, Turner first had to overcome the entire legacy of late rococo academic teachings. He was simultaneously a romantic and a realist — and yet he was neither. His landscapes, far in advance of their time, have been called forerunners of Impressionism, but they also possess traits that influenced Expressionism, and many of his late compositions are thoroughly surrealistic. In reality, Turner’s art cannot be comprehended by such classifications: its essence remains a riddle to art history even today. For his work arises from a unique relation to the nature that it depicts: through his brilliant sketches, he found his way already in the 19th century to a rigorously open kind of painting in which nature sets free the use of colour. And through the workings of the natural elements — especially atmospheric light — Turner confronted nature at the point where nature itself is an image. This book provides the understandings necessary to open up Turner’s paintings for the eye, demonstrating that Turner was not simply illustrating nature, but that his pictures speak directly to the eye as nature does itself — through a world of light and colour.

M.C. Escher was born in 1898 in Leeuwarden (Netherlands). He received his first drawing lessons during secondary school from F.W. van der Haagen, who also taught him the block printing, thus fostering Escher’s innate graphic talents. From 1912 to 1922 he studied at the School of Architecture and Ornamental Design in Haarlem, where he was instructed in graphic techniques by S. Jessurun de Mesquita, who greatly influenced Escher’s further artistic development. Between 1922 and 1934 the artist lived and worked in Italy. Afterwards Escher spent two years in Switzerland and five in Brussels before finally moving back to Barn in Holland, where he died in 1972. M.C. Escher is not a surrealist drawing us into his dream world, but an architect of perfectly impossible worlds who presents the structurally unthinkable as though it were a law of nature. The resulting dimensional and perspectival illusions bring us into confrontation with the limitations of our sensory perception.

The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who later lived in Germany and France, is one of the pioneers of 20th-century art. Nowadays he is regarded as the founder of abstract art and is, moreover, the chief theoretician of this type of painting. Together with Franz Marc and others he founded the group of artists known as the Blauer Reiter in Munich. His art then freed itself more and more from the object, eventually culminating in the First Abstract Watercolour of 1910. In his theoretical writings Kandinsky repeatedly sought the proximity of music; and just as in music, where the individual notes constitute the medium whose effect stems from harmony and euphony, Kandinsky was aiming for a pure concord of colour through the interplay of various shades. Gauguin had demanded that everything must be sacrificed to pure colours. Kandinsky was the first to realize this and thus to influence a whole range of artists.

Summer at the Serpentine Ten years of temporary pavilions by top architects Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London's Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world's top architects to design summer pavilions — temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a showplace for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists ranging from Matthew Barney to Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois or Rachel Whiteread. The pavilions in the Programme that was conceived in 2000 by the Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones, are the work of international architects or design teams who at the time of the Serpentine's invitation have not completed a building in England. A maximum of six months from invitation to completion is allotted. The only architecture program of its type in the world, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions attract up to 250,000 visitors each summer. The Serpentine Pavilion is regularly ranked in the top 5 most attended architecture and design exhibitions worldwide in The Art Newspaper's annual survey of museums and galleries visitor figures. The architect Richard Rogers has stated, «The pavilions, erected for reatively little money, are unbelievably good. The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most important 20th century painters, and one of the few Latin American artists to have achieved a global reputation. In 1983 her work was declared the property of the Mexican state. Kahlo was one of the daughters of an immigrant German photographer and a Mexican woman of Indian origin. Her life and work were more inextricably interwoven than in almost any other artist's case. Two events in her life were of crucial importance. When she was 18, a bus accident put her in hospital for a year with a smashed spinal column and fractured pelvis. It was from her sick bed that she first started to paint. Then, aged 21, she married the world-famous Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera. She was to suffer the effects of the accident her whole life long, and was particularly pained by her inability to have children. Her arresting pictures, most of them small format self-portraits, express the burdens that weighed upon her soul: her unbearable physical pain, the grief that Rivera's occasional affairs prompted, the sorrow about her childlessness caused her, her homesickness when living abroad and her longing to feel that she had put down roots, profound loneliness. However, they also declare her passionate love for her husband, her pronounced sensuousness, and her unwavering survival instinct.
