This is a translation of three medieval tales. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl are two poems by an unknown author written in about 1400. Sir Gawain is a romance, a fairy-tale for adults, full of life and colour; but it is also much more than this, being at the same time a powerful moral tale which examines religious and social values. Pearl is apparently an elegy on the death of a child, a poem pervaded with a sense of great personal loss: but, like Gawain it is also a debate on much less tangible matters. Sir Orfeo is a slighter romance, belonging to an earlier and different tradition. The three translations represent the complete rhyme and alliterative schemes of the original.

The first volume of The Lord of the Rings, now featuring Tolkien's original unused dust-jacket design. Includes special packaging and the definitive edition of the text with fold-out map and colour plate section. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power — the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring — the ring that rules them all — which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose. Now, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first publication, the text has been fully restored with almost 400 corrections — with the full co-operation of Christopher Tolkien — making it the definitive version, and as close as possible to the version that J.R.R. Tolkien intended. Also included is the original red and black map of the Shire and — for the first time — a special plate section containing the pages from the Book of Mazarbul. This 50th anniversary hardback features Tolkien's original unused dust-jacket design, which has been reworked to celebrate this special anniversary.

Frodo and the Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in the battle with an evil spirit in the Mines of Moria; and at the Falls of Rauros, Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape the rest of the company were attacked by Orcs. Now they continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin — alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. Now, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first publication, the text has been fully restored with almost 400 corrections — with the full co-operation of Christopher Tolkien — making it the definitive version, and as close as possible to the version that J.R.R. Tolkien intended. Also included is the original red and black map of Middle-earth as a fold-out sheet. The third volume of The Lord of the Rings, now featuring Tolkien's original unused dust-jacket design. Includes special packaging and the definitive edition of the text, with fold-out maps. The Companions of the Ring have become involved in separate adventures as the quest continues. Aragorn, revealed as the hidden heir of the ancient Kings of the West, joined with the Riders of Rohan against the forces of Isengard, and took part in the desperate victory of the Hornburg. Merry and Pippin, captured by orcs, escaped into Fangorn Forest and there encountered the Ents. Gandalf returned, miraculously, and defeated the evil wizard, Saruman. Meanwhile, Sam and Frodo progressed towards Mordor to destroy the Ring, accompanied by Smeagol — Gollum, still obsessed by his 'preciouss'. After a battle with the giant spider, Shelob, Sam left his master for dead; but Frodo is still alive — in the hands of the orcs. And all the time the armies of the Dark Lord are massing. Now, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first publication, the text has been fully restored with almost 400 corrections — with the full co-operation of Christopher Tolkien — making it the definitive version, and as close as possible to the version that J.R.R. Tolkien intended. Also included are the original red and black maps as fold-out sheets, and — for the first time — a fully revised and enlarged index.

For the first time in A-format, the definitive collection of Tolkiens four acclaimed modern classic fairie tales in the vein of The Hobbit. Farmer Giles of Ham is fat and unheroic, but — having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant — is called upon to do battle when the dragon Chrysophylax comes to town; The Adventures of Tom Bombadil tells by way of verse of Toms many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls; Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the pater Niggle who sets out to paint the perfect tree; Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children. The four tales are written with the same skill, quality and hallmarks that made Tolkiens Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are finally together in a volume which reaffirms Tolkiens place as a master storyteller for readers young and old.

For the first time in A-format paperback, J.R.R. Tolkiens novella about the adventures of a bewitched toy dog While on holiday in 1925, four-year-old Michael Tolkien lost his beloved toy dog on the beach at Filey in Yorkshire. To console him, his father, J.R.R.Tolkien, improvised a story about Rover, a real dog who is magically transformed into a toy and is forced to seek out the wizard who wronged him in order to be returned to normal. This charming tale, peopled by a sand-sorcerer and a terrible dragon, by the king of the sea and the Man-in-the-Moon, went through several drafts over the years. Now, more than 70 years on, the adventures of Rover — or, for reasons that become clear in the story, Roverandom — are published in A-format for the first time. Rich in wit and wordplay, «Roverandom» is edited and introduced by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond and includes Tolkiens own delightful illustrations.

The fourth volume that contains the early myths and legends which led to the writing of Tolkiens epic tale of war, «The Silmarillion». In this fourth volume of «The History of Middle-earth», the shaping of the chronological and geographical structure of the legends of Middle-earth and Valinor is spread before us. We are introduced to the hitherto unknown Ambarkanta or Shape of the World, the only account ever given of the nature of the imagined Universe, ccompanied by maps and diagrams of the world before and after the cataclyusms of «The War of the Gods» and the «Downfall of Numenor». The first map of Beleriend is also reproduced and discussed. In «The Annals of Valinor» and «The Annals of Beleriend» we are shown how the chronology of the First Age was moulded: and the tale is told of Aelfwine, the Englishman who voyaged into the True West and came to Tol Eressea, Lonely Isle, where he learned the ancient history of Elves and Men. Also included are the original Silmarillion of 1926, and the Quenta Noldorinwa of 1930 — the only version of the myths and legends of the First Age that J. R. R. Tolkien completed to their end.

The third volume that contains the early myths and legends which led to the writing of Tolkiens epic tale of war, «The Silmarillion». This, the third volume of «The History of Middle-earth», gives us a priviledged insight into the creation of the mythology of Middle-earth, through the alliterative verse tales of two of the most crucial stories in Tolkiens world — those of Turien and Luthien. The first of the poems is the unpublished «Lay of The Children of Hurin», narrating on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. The second is the moving «Lay of Leithian», the chief source of the tale of Beren and Luthien in «The Silmarillion», telling of the Quest of the Silmaril and the encounter with Morgoth in his subterranean fortress. Accompanying the poems are commentaries on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days. Also included is the notable criticism of «The Lay of The Leithian» by CS Lewis, who read the poem in 1929.

The first of two companion volumes which documents the later writing of «The Silmarillion», Tolkiens epic tale of war. After the «The Lord of the Rings» was at last achieved, J. R. R. Tolkien turned his attention once again to the «Matter of the Elder Days». The text of the «Annals of Aman», the «Blessed Land in the far West», is given in full; while in writings hitherto unknown is seen the nature of the problems that Tolkien explored in his later years, as new and radical ideas, portending upheaval in the old narratives, emerged at the heart of the mythology, and as the destinies of Men and Elves, mortals and immortals, ecame of central significance, together with a vastly enlarged perception of the evil of Melkor, the «Shadow upon Arda». The second part of this history of the later Silmarillion is concerned with developments in the legends of Beleriand after the completion of «The Lord of the Rings».

In this volume Christopher Tolkien completes his account of the writing of «The Lord of the Rings», beginning with Sams rescue of Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol and ending with an unpublished Epilogue in which years after the tale ends, Sam attempts to answer his childrens questions. The book also includes «The Notion Club Papers», a semi-fictional discussion between a group of Oxford Dons of the possibilities of travel in space and time and the legend of Atlantis.

The second of two companion volumes which documents the later writing of «The Silmarillion», Tolkiens epic tale of war. In «The War of the Jewels» Christopher Tolkien takes up his account of the later history of «The Silmarillion» from the point where it was left in Morgoths Ring. The story now returns to Middle-earth, and the ruinous conflict of the High Elves and the Men who were their allies with the power fothe Dark Lord. With the publication in this book of all J.R.R. Tolkiens later narrative writing concerned with the last centuries of the First Age, the long history of «The Silmarillion», from its beginning in «The Book of Lost Tales», is completed; and the enigmatic state of the work at his death can be understood. This book contains the full text of the Grey Annals, the primary record of «The War of the Jewels», and a major story of Middle-earth now published for the first time: the tale of the disaster that overtook the forest people of Brethil when Hurin the Steadfast came among them after his release from long years of captivity in Angband, the fortress of Morgoth.

The forerunner to «The Lord of the Rings», «The Silmarillion» fills in the background which lies behind the more popular work, and gives the earlier history of Middle-earth, introducing some of the key characters. «The Silmarillion» is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkiens World. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in «The Lord of the Rings» look back, and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The tales of «The Silmarillion» are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor.
