Lorsque Machenka parut en anglais en 1970, les lecteurs y apprécièrent surtout les échos du premier amour de Nabokov, la «Tamara» de son autobiographie récemment révisée, Autres rivages. Mais pour le public, ce n'était pas tant un récit autobiographique qu'un portrait de l'exil. Nabokov est ici l'observateur scrupuleux de la vie d'émigré. Situé en avril 1924, quand les Russes fuyaient Berlin en masse, le récit montre Ganine en train de se préparer vaguement à partir de la France. Alfiorov, qui vient d'emménager dans la chambre voisine de celle de Ganine, se prépare à accueillir sa femme, bloquée depuis des années en Russie soviétique, qui doit le retrouver dans six jours, et compte bien l'installer dans la chambre de Ganine. Ganine découvre alors que la femme d'Alfiorov n'est autre que Machenka, son premier amour, avec qui il avait goûté en 1915 tous les délices d'une radieuse passion de jeunesse, jusqu'à ce qu'un an après ils se perdent de vue. En entendant de nouveau son nom, Ganine est brutalement sorti de son engourdissement et revit dans sa mémoire toute la félicité du passé, avec une violence qui efface le présent. Ganine décide de quitter Berlin avec Machenka et, la veille de son arrivée, enivre un Alfiorov surexcité jusqu'à ce qu'il s'effondre inconscient. Il se dirige alors vers la gare pour être le premier à retrouver Machenka et l'escamoter ensuite...

Nabokov's third novel, The Defense, is a chilling story of obsession and madness. De tous mes livres russes, «La défense de Loujine» est celui qui contient et dégage la plus grande «chaleur» — ce qui peut paraître curieux, sachant à quel suprême degré d'abstraction les échecs sont supposés se situer. En fait, Loujine a paru sympathique même au gens qui ne comprennent rien aux échecs et/ou détestent tous mes autres livres. Il est frustre, sale, laid — mais comme ma jeune fille de bonne famille (charmante demoiselle elle-même) le remarque si vite, il y a quelque chose en lui qui transcende aussi bien la rudesse de sa peau grise que la stérilité de son génie abscons.
