Balthus (1908-2001) is one of the truly enigmatic personalities among the painters of the 20th century. Born Balthazar Klossowski de Rola, he grew up in Berlin, Switzerland and Paris, and later moved back and forth between France, the Far East and Rome. Continually crossing all sorts of borders, he remained an outsider throughout his life. His art was a sensuous and poetical admixture of fairytale, Eros and dreams; it was figurative in an age of abstraction and painted using the techniques of Italian Quattrocento fresco — in other words, at no point did it fit any customary category. This extraordinary illustrated volume is devoted to the early masterpieces and is published on the occasion of Balthus' centenary in February 2008. Sabine Rewald is the author of books on, among others, Caspar David Friedrich, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, and Balthus.

Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt is known for his candid black-and-white shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings. First published in 1997 and designed by the artist himself, this reprint presents his official Magnum pictures and many personal exposures.

German photo artist Thomas Ruff is a master of conceptual serial photography. He made a name for himself in the early eighties with oversized, superrealistic color portraits of his artist friends and as a pioneer of the Diasec process used to mount photographic images onto acrylic glass, thereby obviating frames, liberating photography from the print gallery and paving the way to the grand gallery museum walls for large-format photos. In the mosaic that forms the seemingly immortal image of Marilyn Monroe this is probably the last, and certainly the finest, previously unpublished piece: the photographs of Milton H. Greene, from 1953 to 1957 Marilyn's photographer, artistic adviser, and business partner. In a series of skillful maneuvers Greene freed Marilyn from the shackles of her slave contract with Twentieth Century-Fox and formed their independent production company — Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc. Thanks to this coup, she was at last able to command commensurate fees, choose her own vehicles, and triumph in Bus Stop and The Prince and the Showgirl, giving under Milton's tutelage her finest performances. The singular relationship between the celebrated photographer and the box-office blonde, illuminated for the first time by James Kotsilibas-Davis's original text, was intense and extremely fruitful. At times Marilyn even lived with Milton's family, finding the secure professional and personal base that she so desperately needed for her work and her emotional well-being. Their collaboration broke up in 1957, when Marilyn's third husband, playwright Arthur Miller, became involved in his wife's business affairs. Embittered, Milton Greene withdrew from MMP and refused to allow anyone to examine or publish the bulk of his Marilyn photos before his death in 1985. Disputes over his estate considerably delayed publication of this treasure trove of Marilyn images. This volume contains a rich selection of Milton H. Greene's photographs, most of which have never been published before. They present Marilyn Monroe at the zenith of her physical beauty — she never looked so erotic, elegant, or vulnerable, as she did toMilton's unerring eye.

Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664) was one of the great Spanish painters of the Baroque period. Anton Corbijn's new feature film is a suspense thriller titled The American, starring George Clooney. Its world-wide release is scheduled for fall 2010. Based on Martin Booth s 1992 novel A Very Private Gentleman, the movie is set in Sweden and in the Abruzzo region of Italy. The protagonist is a gunsmith and sometime hitman who tries to change his life, only to find out the hard way that you can t undo the past. Not one to give up on his old life, director-cumphotographer Anton Corbijn daily took his stillcamera to the set, and this book is the proof of that. Filled with candid on and off set photographs accompanied by Corbijn s diary style writing, it provides a unique insight into the making of The American.

Bettina Rheims has been one of the most acclaimed woman photographers of France since the early 80s, when she first showed her sensational female nudes and portraits. Film stars, actresses and artists, models, friends, country fair acrobats and strippers— known and unknown women have posed in front of her lens during the past twenty years. Female Trouble, first published in 1989 by Schirmer/Mosel, presents a selection of some one hundred photographs—brilliant studies on womankind mostly in black and white, her favored technique mastered with a unique subtlety. Beaumont Newhall (1908-1993) war der erste Kurator für Photographie am Museum of Modern Art, New York. Wir freuen uns, dieses unverzichtbare Handbuch zur technischen und ästhetischen Entwicklung der Photographie von ihren Anfängen 1839 bis zur Gegenwart jetzt in einer broschierten Neuauflage anbieten zu können. Beaumont Newhall, der nicht nur als Photohistoriker und Autor zahlreicher Bücher, Aufsätze und Katalogbeiträge internationalen Ruf genoß, sondern auch selbst photographierte, leitete ab 1948 das George Eastman House in Rochester, die weltweit angesehenste und umfangreichste Sammlung für Photographie.

Zu den großen Kostbarkeiten der botanischen Literatur zählt das Buch, das der Nürnberger Apotheker Basilius Besler (1561-1629) im Jahr 1613 über den von ihm für den Fürstbischof von Eichstätt angelegten Garten herausgab. Der Eichstätter Garten war ein weit über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus berühmtes Wunderwerk der Botanik, Zier und Nutzgarten, Forschungsstätte und Ort der Erbauung. Während des Dreißigjährigen Krieges wurde er zerstört. Die 367 großformatigen Kupferstiche sind fast 1100 Pflanzenarten aus aller Herren Länder abgebildet. Die Pflanzen werden in lateinischer Sprache erläutert und mit ihren altdeutschen Namen bezeichnet.

This book gets its name from 60 unusually dark and cryptic photographs. When Newton opened his «Archives of the Night» in the 90’s, gloomy images emerged like flocks of bats. His famous «Domestic Nudes» appeared in pairs and tableaus together with sinister landscapes. Palace architecture was displayed next to morbid vanitas paintings as were bodies cut open from an anatomical museum of wax figures, placed on show alongside a portrait of a Dracula star putting on his make-up. With the Archives, Newton, who decided on the placement of these works himself, showed us his dark side. But at the same time, he was amusing himself with grey areas – also typical for Newton. The juxtaposition of seemingly disparate motifs created new and enigmatic relationships that oscillate between satire and poetry, brutality and gentleness, irony and pathos.

Globetrotting filmmaker Wim Wenders always takes his old panorama camera with him, using it whenever the sheer wealth of what he sees and the impression it leaves on him breaks the normal scale of things. Infinite landscapes, endless horizons, deserts, and mountain ranges overwhelm by their emptiness and silence, street fronts in Havana, Houston, Berlin, or Jerusalem offer deep insights into the shallows of civilization. Wenders’ photographs are pictures of a world almost devoid of humans, a natural or man-made world viewed from a distance. They shed light on the many guises the surface of the earth dons and attest to Wenders’ contemplative and amazed gaze. This gaze, of course, didn’t stop at September 11 and delivered haunting photos of Ground Zero taken shortly after the attack. With poetic comments by the artist on all the pictures, the book is both a portrait of the world as encountered by the photographer and a portrait of the photographer as reflected in his vision of the world.

Die meisten der hier versammelten Aufnahmen — darunter auch Landschaften, Impressionen, verschwindende Orte — entstanden während des Jahres 2007 im Vorfeld einer Werkausstellung von Jim Rakete bei Camera Work in Berlin.

Corbijn's recent project is a biopic on the troubled life of post-punk Joy Division lead musician Ian Curtis. «In Control» is his visual diary of the making of the film, with handwritten notations, drawings, and a wealth of photographs detailing the creative process from pre-production to first screenings.
