The Commissar Vanishes offers a chilling look at how Joseph Stalin manipulated the science of photography to advance his own political career and to erase the memory of his victims. On Stalin's orders, purged rivals were airbrushed from group portraits, and crowd scenes were altered to depict even greater legions of the faithful. For example, a 1919 photograph showing a large crowd of Bolsheviks clustered around Lenin, became, with the aid of the retoucher, an intimate portrait of Lenin and Stalin sitting alone, and then, in a later version, of Stalin by himself. In each case, the juxtaposition of the original and the doctored images yields a fascinating — and often terrifying and tragic — insight into one of the darkest chapters of modern history.

Henri Matisse (1869 — 1954) is one of the leading figures of modern art. His unparalleled cut-outs are among the most significant of any artist's late works. When ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors as his primary technique to make maquettes for a number of commissions, from books and stained glass window designs to tapestries and ceramics. Taking the form of a 'studio diary', the catalogue re-examines the cut-outs in terms of the methods and materials that Matisse used, and looks at the tensions in the works between finish and process; fine art and decoration; contemplation and utility; and drawing and colour.

Andrei Tarkovsky is widely regarded as one of the most significant filmmakers of modern times. Fundamental to his practice are the poems that his father, Arsenii, created. With two introductory essays, extensive notes and appendices, this volume extends the usual parameters of a poetry book by placing it within the context of the father/ son and poet/film-maker relationship that so dominates the Tarkovsky story.

Marc Chagall (1887 — 1985) is one of the great artists of the last century. Walker Evans is one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. The progenitor of the documentary tradition in American photography, his principal subject was the vernacular the indigenous expressions of a people found in roadside stands, cheap cafes, advertisements and small-town main streets. For fifty years, from the late 1920s to the early 1970s, Evans recorded the American scene with the nuance of a poet and the precision of a surgeon, creating an encyclopedic visual catalogue of modern America in the making. First published by The Museum of Modern Art in 1938, and often out of print since then, American Photographshas been the key touchstone for photographers and those who seek to understand the lyrical potential of the medium. Daido Moriyama emerged from the Provoke movement of the 1960s, which challenged, primarily through its publications, the rigid artistic formalities of the Japanese photographic scene at that time, he created highly innovative and intensely personal work, often depicting what he saw as the breakdown of traditional values in post-war Japan. Born in 1938 in Osaka, Moriyama moved to Tokyo in 1961. He became a fully-fledged freelance photographer in 1964: among his early influences were his contemporary Shomei Tomatsu, as well as the work of William Klein in New York, Andy Warhol's silkscreened newspaper images, and the writings of Jack Kerouac. His pictures, are characterised by a gritty, high contrast black-and-white aesthetic, or 'are, bure, boke' (grainy, blurry, out-of-focus), concentrate on the little-seen parts of the city and the fragmentary nature of modern realities. This book, the only survey of Moriyama's work currently available in English, includes an introduction by Simon Baker, Curator of Photography at Tate, and two newly translated texts on the artist: The Myth of the City' by Koji Taki; and 'Reconsidering «Grainy, Blurry, Out-of-focus» by Minoru Shimizu which was first published in Moriyama's seminal photobook Farewell Photography, and translated into English here for the first time. Susan Hiller was born in the United States in 1940. Rather than attending art school she studied anthropology, moving to London in the early 1960s where she became an artist. Employing a wide variety of media, Hiller has done much in recent decades to redefine what a work of art can be. Much of her work is centred on the subconscious mind and ideas of the paranormal present in cultures around the world. Specific works have investigated auras, extra sensory perception, close encounters, dreams and automatic writing. Many are large-scale installations, variously employing film, audio, video and projection.
