This lavishly illustrated book brings to light the diverse work and the growing influence of this early 20th‐century Japanese artist and designer. Kamisaka Sekka (18661942), little known until recent years, is being reappreciated and influencing a new generation of artists and designers in Japan and beyond. Through over 200 illustrations discover the work of Kamisaka Sekka as well as early Rinpa masters and contemporary artist such as Yamaguchi Ai, Yamamoto Taró, Sydney‐based fashion designer Akira Isogawa and Kyoto-based textile artists Kenzo and Hiromu Takao. Sekka was awakened to an ancient and truly Japanese aesthetic through his travels in Europe where he saw the art nouveau style as well as the influence of Japonisme on European art. The aesthetic he revived is the art of Rinpa which was practised in Japan in late 16th and early 17th centuries when Kyoto was the countrys capital and cultural centre. Sekka sought to revive the courtly beauty of old Kyoto through his transmission of the Rinpa style into the modern industrial and consumer age, forging a unique visual language. Drawing on subjects such as birds, flowers and classical narrative scrolls, he created sumptuous, refined works not only in painting but also textiles, lacquerware, ceramics, furnishings, architecture and garden design. Blurring the boundary between art and craft, Sekka aimed to imbue all objects in our daily lives with an aesthetic quality.

At the beginning of the Second World War the Ministry of Information, through the advice of Kenneth Clark, commissioned Cecil Beaton to photograph the Home Front. Beaton set to work recording the destruction of the Wren churches in the City and the heroism of Londoners under attack. He conducted a survey of Bomber and Fighter Commands for the RAF, which was published with Beaton's own astute commentary. Beaton was an effective propagandist, but his voice, like his photographs, was touchingly elegant. Whatever his subject, Beaton was always a stylist. Beaton's wartime work for the Ministry amounted to seven thousand photographs, which are now housed with their negatives at the Imperial War Museums. They form a great document both of the landscape of war and of the passing of the Empire. He travelled through the Western Desert and on to Iraq, Palestine, Transjordan and Syria. In 1943 he left for India where he photographed the final days of the Raj in New Delhi and Calcutta before joining the Burma campaign. He ended the war deep in Chinese territory where he witnessed the Nationalist resistance to the Japanese. Beaton's inherent sense of theatre extended from palatial drawing rooms to the jungle and the desert. Whatever the circumstances he never departed from his radical aesthetic. Theatre of War is published in conjunction with the Imperial War Museums on the occasion of a major exhibition.

Josef Sudek was Prague's Atget. From the mid-1920s until his death in 1976, Sudek photographed everything — the Gothic and Baroque architecture, the streets and objects — usually leaving the frame free of people. Where Atget photographed the social realities of Paris, Sudek captured a more subjective experience of the city where he was born. Because he was reclusive, a large portion of Sudek's body of work was captured through his studio window — he was particularly fond of how the glass refracted light. The Window of My Studio series, spanning from the beginning of the Second World War to the first half of the 1950s, has never previously been compiled in one volume. This publication presents the series, which was of fundamental importance to Sudek, for it caused his work to verge even more into a Surreal or Magical Realist style, with blurred images and strong shadows. Photography historian Anna Farova contributes an introduction and an extensive biographical chronology to this volume, which also includes a complete bibliography of portfolios, books and catalogues of Sudek's work, as well as a complete list of his exhibitions — information that is difficult to find elsewhere. The publication has been produced in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Frantisek Drtikol (1883 1961) is considered to be the first Czech photographer enjoying international fame. Anna Fárová s legendary exhibit in Prague in 1972 led to the rediscovery of his briefly forgotten work. This elaborate, illustrated volume is devoted to the nude portraits, one of the focal points in Dritkol s oeuvre. Art Nouveau and Symbolism were strong influences on his early photographs, in which his nudes are presented as dreamy nymphs or femme fatales. After the end of World War I, he developed his own fascinating photographic style, characterized by geometric elements, expressive, dynamic poses, and dramatic lighting. An Art Deco photographer, as Fárová called him, Drtikol was inspired by Futurism, Expressionism, and Cubism to discover his own lyrical, formal vocabulary.

The series of photographs that Joseph Sudek created in the Mionsí Forest of Morovia's Beskid Mountains is perhaps the most classically Romantic and visually stunning body of work ever made by this important Czech photographer. In the late 1920s, while shooting the interior of Prague's iconic Cathedral of St. Vitus during its final phase of completion, Sudek learned a great deal about light. Years later, alone, deep in the virgin forest, he lay in wait for the light that he knew would lend the ancient trees their ghostly aspect--finding graceful compositions in isolated wilderness. Photography historian Antonín Dufek penned the introduction to this volume, which is the first to present such a comprehensive set of Sudek's photographs of the Mionsí Forest, the ruins surrounding Hukvaldy castle and the foothills of the Beskids. Josef Sudek, born in 1896 in Kolín, was a bookbinder and amateur photographer for several years before studying at the State School of Graphic Arts with Karel Novak. Along with a handful of other young Modernists, he founded the Czech Photographic Society in 1924. While maintaining a successful commercial career, Sudek nurtured a lifelong, Romantic fascination with light and mood. He died at the age of 80 in 1976.

The title Cose Mai Viste translates literally as «things never seen,» and applies here in two senses. The most direct describes works never before shown, never exhibited or published. The broader describes views that no one but Giacomelli has ever seen, moments when only he was there. Now that he is gone, only his prints remain to describe them--or transform them. As a self-taught artist who became a star of postwar Italian photography, Mario Giacomelli (1913-2000) made his name with images of the country around him, particularly the series There Are No Hands to Caress My Face, which showed young seminarians playing in the snow, in brilliant graphic contrast to their black cassocks. His single frame «The Boy from Scanno,» also made its way into exceptionally wide circulation in John Szarkiowski's classic Looking at Photographs.
