The book is a guide for students and teachers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand analytical sketching in architecture. The presentation focuses on drawing as an approach to and phase of architectural design. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but exploration. The first part of the book discusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a compliment to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of «facade» are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how facades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between «traditional vs. digital» gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and natural world through freehand drawing. The author, Eric Jenkins has received several teaching awards and design awards. He is Associate Professor at Catholic University of America's School of Architecture and Planning where he teaches design, theory and analytical sketching. He earned a Masters in Design Studies from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and has previously published «To Scale: One Hundred Urban Plans».

Other projects develop smart re-use concepts for railroad tracks that no longer serve their original purpose, such as Kyung-Chun railway in Seoul or Katy Trail in Dallas. All case studies are described extensively with technical diagrams and plans for repositioning infrastructure as a viable medium for addressing issues of ecology, transit, urbanism, performance, and habitat.

Maar de beelden zijn vluchtig. De eigen waarneming mist soms verankering. Fotograaf Erik Hijweege biedt met dit boek volop de gelegenheid voor die verankering. Drie jaar lang reisde hij door Nederland, steeds weer op zoek naar plaatsen die iets te zeggen hebben over de stand van het land. De klassieke 8x10 inch-camera die hij gebruikt, dwingt hem om letterlijk wat langer bij de dingen stil te staan. Er moet eerst een stevige driepoot worden neergezet. Door gebruik te maken van de zogenoemde tilt-shift-techniek kan hij spelen met scherpte en onscherpte, en ons oog leiden naar plaatsen waar het volgens hem heen moet. Ook kiest hij altijd een hoog standpunt. Hijweege laat met zijn foto's zien hoe Nederland voor een groot deel met mensenhand is gemaakt, als onderdeel van 'de strijd tegen het water'. Zompige moerassen werden dankzij windmolens omgetoverd tot vruchtbare weidegrond, in de oude Zuiderzee verschenen uitgestrekte polders en de Deltawerken zorgden ervoor dat de Zeeuwen hun uit het rampjaar 1953 stammende angst voor het water achter zich konden laten. Op de foto's zijn die mensen vaak heel klein, maar zij zijn het die Nederland steeds weer vorm weten te geven. Door vlakbij de kerk met blote handen een houten zeewering aan te leggen op Schokland, door zeven miljoen bollen in de grond te stoppen op de Keukenhof of door Schiphol uit te bouwen tot een van de vooraanstaande luchthavens in Europa. Het zijn de bouwstenen van Nederland aan het begin van de 21ste eeuw. Zij vormen een sterker fundament dan velen soms denken.
