This is the first biography of Marie Spartali Stillman and is based on full access to her family's archives. As much of her work can only be found in private collections, many of the works illustrated here have not been seen by the public since 1908.

Frames fulfil a variety of functions, from the protective to the decorative; they can indicate ownership or they can assert the importance of the paintings they enclose. In their shape and ornamentation, frames are linked to architectural forms or to furniture and interior design, while many styles of decoration can be related to the work of goldsmiths and of sculptors. Few pictures survive in their original frames because of changing ownership: they were re-framed so as to harmonise with different settings, whether in princely galleries or private houses. The way that a picture is framed strongly affects its visual appearance and impact. When a painting retains its original frame, we can appreciate the visual relationship between the two that the artist would have intended. Framings by subsequent owners with different frame styles can tell us much about the taste and priorities of a particular period or place. This book looks at frame history and design in the context of the Ashmolean Museum's collection of frames, and aims to provide a sense of the importance of the picture frame in the history of art as a whole.

The Spanish master-painter Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) is revered not only for the delicate and sensitive treatment of his subjects but also for his radical political stance and modern sensibility. Towards the end of his life, embittered by the appalling cruelty of the Napoleonic Wars in Spain, Goya decorated the walls of his house outside Madrid with a series of 14 terrifying murals that depicted the underbelly of life and the remorselessness of human existence. Known as the Black Paintings, this series of murals is recognized as one of Goya's greatest masterpieces and now hangs in the Prado. Fully illustrated, this is the only book on the Black Paintings currently in print in English. When This You See... is a series of 31 artworks in the medium of embroidery, made between 1996 and 1999, by the American artist Elaine Reichek. All of these beautiful images are reproduced here in full colour and three appear in spectacular gatefolds. traditional samplers dating from the mid- seventeeth to the early-eighteenth century. Created by girls and women as an educational exercise and as a pastime, samplers generally framed truisms, homilies, amd lessons within decorative patterns and motifs. In When This You See..., Reichek replaces these familiar sayings with quotations from mythology, literature, science, art history, and popular culture, to witty and pointed effect. Most of the quotations relate to the arts of weaving, knitting, or embroidery, but the astonishing results range far more widely, operating as social critique, as commentary on the relations between the sexes, and as a challenge. Extending and clarifying that challenge, Reichek punctuates the sequence of the samplers with a number of embroideries derived from works by well-known contemporary artists. Humourous and sophisticated, her art is also visually gorgeous.

Filled to the brim with images, this scrapbook of the 1930s overflows with nostalgia, for those who remember that extraordinary era. For those who do not, this wealth of imagery provides a vivid insight into a time when sliced bread had just reached the table and Butlin's holiday camps had recently opened. Life in the 1930s for many was not easy; for others, who had known Victorian times, the pace of change was frightening, and 'modern' life led to 'nerve tension'. Yet change brought a better standard of living and numerous new products helped the daily routine. Electrical appliances were a boon to housewives without servants, affordable motor cars made access to the countryside easier, new fun included Dinky Toys, Monopoly and a stream of delectable confectionery (Mars bars, KitKat, Black Magic, Cadbury's Roses). The aluminium milk bottle top made its appearance. Design was memorable for the red telephone kiosk, the Anglepoise lamp and the Underground map — all still in evidence today. The Royal Family went through a turbulent year following the death of George V, when Edward VIII decided he had to abdicate. The speeding motorist was hampered by 30 mph restrictions, and pedestrian crossings were guarded by Belisha beacons. By the end of the 1930s, television held exciting promise for the future, but a growing tension focused on impending war.
